New PM² Programme Canvas is released

Following the publication of the PM² Project Initiation and Project End Canvases, the Methodologies Office is now introducing the PM² Programme Canvas.

The PM² Programme Canvas is a free and open tool designed to help programme managers and teams define key programme elements, ensuring alignment on objectives, expected benefits, and strategic priorities. It provides a structured visual framework that captures essential components such as programme context, boundaries, stakeholders, risks, outcomes, benefits, and success criteria. This enhances clarity and coordination across interrelated projects, improving overall programme management.

A one-page document designed to capture the main programme components: programme context and boundaries, programme components, desired outcomes and intended benefits, budget, approach, risks, governance, programme stakeholders, business implementation, dependencies, constraints, success criteria, and critical success factors.

The canvas can be used in every phase of the programme lifecycle. It is developed during the Initiating Phase to provide concise visual representation of the programme. It could be used in the Planning Phase to highlight the incremental release of outcomes and benefits, ensuring value delivery. In the Executing Phase, the canvas could be used to track progress and mark stage milestones, and in the Closing Phase it could be revisited to evaluate the achieved outcomes and to capture lessons learned for future programmes.

How to use the PM²-PgM Canvas

The PM² Programme Canvas acts as a communication enabler, providing a structured yet flexible format to present programme details clearly. It can be used as:

  • A visual overview for stakeholders, summarising key elements such as objectives, milestones, and risks.
  • A collaborative tool for workshops, supporting discussions on risk identification, stakeholder engagement, and strategic alignment.
  • A coordination mechanism across programme components, standardising programme communication and fostering cross-team collaboration.
  • An information radiator, keeping the team aligned by displaying the Canvas in shared spaces or digital dashboards.

While not a formal PM² Artefact, the PM² Programme Canvas is a valuable resource for improving programme effectiveness. It is available in editable PPT and PDF (print) formats for download on the PM² Resource page. Organisations, teams, and service providers are encouraged to leverage and share these free resources to enhance programme management practices.
